This is a track by Stones Throw artist Aloe Blacc. Aloe used to rap with producer Exile (of Blu & Exile fame) as a part of the group Emanon. He decided to take up singing, or at least focus more on it, and this gem of an R&B/Neo-Soul album Shine Through was the result. Full of dope songs, try “Bailar” for starters.

Switching over into the indie rock world, I’ve recently seen a lot of bands popping up using “Japan-” puns. It’s weird I know, but Japandroids make it work. I’m seeing this melodic punk duo at Pitchfork Fest this Sunday– I’ll be wyling out when this track “Young Hearts Spark Fire” hits.

Finally is Amadou and Miriam, a middle aged couple from Mali. They play genre-defying, grooved out, African jazz rock. They play instruments I’ve never even heard of. They were recently named MTV.com’s Best of 2009 (So Far) list. Oh yeah, and they’re blind. Here’s the first track off their album Welcome to Mali.

DJ Steph Floss came down to Next Coventry to hang out this week and add to his already ginourmous sneaker collection. He’s still going strong 4 months into his quest to produce 365 vlogs, one for everyday of the year. 1/3 done Floss!

Rainbow Sandals was established in 1974 in Laguna Beach, California by Jay “Sparky” Longley and is currently based out of San Clemente, California. The company specializes in men’s and women’s leather, hemp, and rubber flip-flops.
When Longley first started making sandals, he was assembling 15 pairs per day out of leather and Malaysian rubber in the garage of his Laguna Beach home.He relocated to San Clemente in 1975 and began manufacturing 1,200 pairs of sandals a day. Since 2002, the majority of the sandals have been produced in China.
Once sold exclusively in California, Rainbow has grown to become one of the top three best-selling brands of sandals in the United States. There are only two full Rainbow Sandals stores in the US currently, one in Los Angeles and one in New York City.
Rainbows have built-in arch support and mold to the wearer’s individual foot shape. Rainbow officially recommends a number of procedures to “break them in”, as some first time users may find that the straps are too tight, or the toe piece is too far back. These include getting them wet and wearing them wet in order to make the materials more supple to mold to the wearer’s feet, as the sandals were originally designed for surfers and long boarders. Think of them like raw denim, but for your feet. They also recommend physically stretching the straps by hand and/or place a round object, such as a water bottle, under the straps at night.

We had some more flicks from the grand opening party that we felt we needed to share. The event was a huge success, and once again thanks to everyone who came out to support, including DJ’s Mick Boogie and K-Nyce, Eighty81, Heart&Sole, Clothing Brigade, and more. After the jump is another slideshow of pics as well.
Since we buried the King of Pop this week, I thought it only fitting to recommend some of my favorite, lesser-known Michael Jackson tracks. Everyone knows “Billie Jean”, “Thriller”, and “Smooth Criminal”, but here are some gems that I feel often get overlooked.

This is probably my favorite Jacko song, created in between his Jackson 5 years and his solo career. This track is so funky and danceable that it easily stands the test of time.

Next is from Mike’s reinvention and arguably best album (purely based on the music), “Off the Wall”. Debuting when Mike was only 21, all the tracks are incredible but this one was a special diamond that you don’t hear much about.

Then I figured I’d throw a modern day remix in here for good measure. This remix is off the Motown Remixed album that came out a few years back. There’s two Jackson 5 remixes on it, but I prefer the Z-Trip rework of “I want you back”. Check it out.

Enjoy, and RIP to one of the greatest artists of all time.

Like the Hyperdunk “Back to the Future II” Mcfly release of last year, the Hyperize will be released with a movie theme as well, “White Men Can’t Jump”. Lucky for Cleveland, Next will be receiving this limited edition shoe.Â
I am a huge fan of the Hyperdunk, both on and off the court, and I supposed you could call the Hyperize the Hyperdunk 2.0. So, I expect to cop too many pairs of them. Don’t bet your money away, and stay tuned for an update on location and landing date.

I posted a week ago about the Nike Air Maxim 1+ now lets talk about the original Air Max 1. Nike Air Max was first released in 1987 in a nylon/synthetic suede combo with a transparent window for the Max Air-sole unit. Despite incredulity that led customers to poke and squeeze the Air-sole, the Air Max quickly proved to be a hit. A leather edition soon followed in 1988 and from 1988-1992, Nike used a variety of colors and fabric combinations to keep a contemporary look. In 1992, however, the Air Max was reissued with two major design changes. These reissued models were manufactured in leather and used the midsole and outsole design from the Air Max 90 (then known as the Air Max 3. Nike did reissue the nylon Air Max 1995, but continued to experiment with the design, eventually reducing the size of the Nike Swoosh. To date, the Air Max continues to evolve as Nike tries to keep this classic running shoe contemporary. I have been waiting for this shoe to come back around for a LONG time.
Once again Next brings you the best shoe selection in Cleveland. Available now.
