Adam Vs. David is a weekly feature on RuleofNext.com that pits Adam and David against each other in a test of picking their favorite new product at Next. The winner is chosen by you; just leave your pick in a comment on this post. The winner will be announced the following week. This week is the denim battle. Adam has chosen Edwin denim, and David picked Nudie denim.
Last week’s winner:
David with the Vans Era.
Adam’s Pick: Edwin Denim
Edwin IS denim, seriously, Tsunemi the founder of Edwin crafted the name by rearranging the letters of denim and flipping the “m” upside down, so that denim became Edwin. I could end the argument there, but I’m looking to crush my competition after my defeat last week.

Besides Tsunemi holding the Guinness World record for “quickest to solve the back of a kid’s menu”, he was also a style pioneer, and denim presented a landscape for him to explore. Edwin’s innovative techniques of “old wash” and “stone washing” took denim, which at the time was a traditional workwear clothing item, and made it into a style cornerstone.

Being that durability is the driving inspiration behind denim manufacturing, Edwin also created what was the World’s heaviest denim, 16 ounces, in 1963. Of course, this weight has been surpassed, both by competition and by Edwin in more recent years, but we shouldn’t forget what brand started it all.

Now, if being at the forefront of style and durability isn’t enough to secure my victory, how about exclusivity. Edwin was not sold in the U.S. the past two years, due to the exchange rate between the yen and the dollar. With Edwin’s return, the brand remains very limited. It’s products are only sold in 75 specialty stores in the country. If all that is not convincing enough, Edwin has also been fine tuning their denim making skills for 63 years. Which takes me back to where I started. I say again “Edwin is denim”.

I may have lost the first battle, but “ARE YOU READY FOR A WAR?” -Adam Miclot.
David’s pick: Nudie Denim

Thanks to everyone who helped me win last week, now help me get a little streak going here! Nudie is a denim company from Gothenburg, Sweden. Nudie is the “naked truth about denim.” That’s real talk right there. What exactly does it mean though? It means Nudie recognizes denim lives with you when you wear it. Indigo fades with time and wear and shows the true character of the denim. Nudie is all about making jeans that can look better the more you wear them. Jeans are more than just a piece of clothing.

The model I picked is the Slim Jim. The Slim Jim is a straight fit that can either worn fitted, regular, or loose depending on the size you choose. The color is described as “dry dark.” Weave threads are dyed with indigo, weft threads are brown. This combination gives the denim its dark, but natural look. There is no wash on these jeans, the texture and color is a blank canvas for you to work with.

Slim Jims are 11.9oz jeans. Not too heavy, but not too light. In a place like Cleveland, where the weather can be almost 80 degrees one day, and 40 the next, it’s important to have versatile jeans. Being constructed with what is called “broken weft,” the Slim Jims resist the twisting of the leg that so often occurs with regular twill jeans. Also, unlike ring-ring/double ringspun denim, the broken weft allows the Slim Jims to retain a smooth surface both inside and out. Unlike a lot of premium raw denim out there, these bangers have a zip fly too! It seems like a no-brainer to have a zipper instead of a row of buttons, but most higher end jeans don’t have it!

These are made of 100% organic cotton from Turkey. This cotton is shipped to Italy to be crafted into the jeans you see before you right now. Organic farming is very important to Nudie as cotton production is responsible for 25% of all insecticide use worldwide! Nudie is a leader in making responsible choices for the environment while still making killer jeans.

There’s a reason you keep seeing those orange (or white or blue) waves on the pockets of everyone’s jeans… because Nudies are some of the best jeans you can buy in Cleveland (or anywhere for that matter). Nudies are the real deal. They’re the “naked truth about denim.”
Come on guys, real recognize real, let’s show Adam what’s up. PREPARE FOR COMBAT.

David has done it yet again with the Slim Jim Nudie. Edwin is a nice denim but for overall fit and look I go with the Nudies the fact they are 100% organic cotton gives them the edge also. Sorry Adam

Nudie is the cool guys denim. Edwin is the real mans denim, meant to be abused. Edwin FTW.
SIDE NOTE, I once found a pair of selvedge Edwins at the Goodwill by the old Shaker Next one day after work. for $5, no lie. alas, they had been washed prematurely but I still copped them on principle!
