Every 9/11, I have the privilege of joining the folks from Timberland in a community service event. Timberland is involved in many charitable events throughout the year, and have been doing the 9/11 event ever since that tragedy occurred. It is their way of giving back to the New York area. I have participated in the last 3 of these events and each time, I have come back home with a renewed perspective on life, community and the whole notion of service. The past two years our “service team” focused our efforts on improving the environment of an elementary school in the Bronx. What started out as an abandoned field next to the school has slowly been transformed into a lush and productive garden. The formally cold and barren concrete school hallways have gradually become populated with colorful murals that the team has painted over the years. It is quite impressive to see the Timberland execs, many of them high ranking, give up their time and “sweat” to help a community that they personally have no connection with. It is also commendable how Timberland is able to “cut” through the bureaucracy that often surrounds charitable efforts, and is able to immediately affect the end user, in this case some great kids in the Bronx. And this “work” will continue year after year after year. All I can say is that I am honored that they keep inviting me back to help them.
