With the release of The Mr. Michael Hurley Collection today, its safe to say that I am a little on edge. Primarily studying womenswear as a fashion student at Kent State University, the menswear projects weren’t exactly something I looked forward to each semester. Although my design aesthetic always had somewhat of a masculine look to it, I never really put a lot of thought into actually going into menswear. With NEXT being a menswear driven company, when we decided to start developing some of our own in house brands, I thought “how hard could it be?”…Well it turned out to be a lot harder than I thought.
Menswear was a little bit more of a challenge, and as it can be very confining it is very important not to be influenced by whats already in the market. You may never realize it but sometimes you subconsciously design what you have already seen before. It is so important to me to stay off fashion blogs or any type of fashion websites, when designing. Instead I like to find inspiration in art, photography, movies, books , etc. When designing whether it be fashion or any creative field, I feel its always important to start with an inspiration. I was always taught that an inspiration allows you to continuously invent new ideas while creating numerous variations that stem from them. So when Mike and I sat down and decided that the collection was going to be inspired by the athlete and the sport of fashion, I thought we were set. However, even with an inspiration, menswear has its restrictions.
In designing womenswear, you usually don’t have to ask yourself, “Will or can a woman wear that? because in most cases the answer is yes. After every sketch I draw, fabric I pick, or prototype I sew, I routinely ask myself “Hey Mike would you wear this?” “Does that look to feminine?” or “How many numbers do you think you would get at the club in that outfit?” HAAA This definitely is true when you are designing for more of a diffusion market, where your main goal is to make sure it sells at a reasonable price point instead of how original it looks.
In any kind of design or any creative field you continuously strive to be innovative. Designing menswear really forced me to think outside of the box. You have to think more about simpler silhouettes, that allow details to really stand out. The way a garment is color blocked or pieced together, unusual zipper placements, unordinary fabrics or even just fit are all details I constantly try to change up in a design. As the first set of the collection is set to release today I think we did a great job incorporating all these different elements while still keeping these pieces at practical prices.
The Mr. Michael Hurley Collection is a menswear line showcasing the fusion of sports and fashion. In the latest terms it conceptualizes the idea of couture athleticism-the sport of fashion. It will mix athletic fabrics with textiles such as leather and neoprene for a innovative sporty look. Layering and functionality are the two major components of this line. The first set of pieces set to drop today will feature simpler silhouettes, color blocking, layering items, some logo and graphic driven pieces, and a minimal color palette with some pop color.
