People are always talking about Living Large but I’d rather be “Livin’ XLARGE?”
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, XLARGE clothing is continuing to make XLARGE moves. Their apparel is so much more than clothes, they represent a generation’s culture. Grown out of the synergy of 90′s California street cultures, XLARGE still represents the ideas and attitudes that inspired its origin 20 years ago.
This is the motto of 10 Deep. Their philosophy is that strength lies in the hands of an individual (10 fingers), not in the approval of one’s peers. This kind of attitude is what the brand is about. It’s derived from the same passion and attitude of the streets. The hip hop, skate, punk and graffiti subcultures of the streets is where 10 Deep developed. It’s a brand that reflects individuality and a no BS approach to life. Forget the haters, forget the opinions of others. The only voice to be heard is the one that drives you internally.
John Fleuvog is a quirky shoe designer from Vancouver BC Canada whose industrial, art-deco style shoes are unique in appearance and somewhat exclusive in number. With only 100 to 300 pairs of each style made available to retailers, John Fleuvog shoes are sometimes hard to come by. Fortunately for the Cleveland area, John Fleuvog shoes are available at NEXT. Keep reading to see how John Fleuvog shoes are made.

Adam Vs. David is a weekly feature on RuleofNext.com that pits Adam and David against each other in a test of picking their favorite new product at Next. The winner is chosen by you; just leave your pick in a comment on this post. The winner will be announced the following week. This week is the denim battle. Adam has chosen Edwin denim, and David picked Nudie denim.
Last week’s winner:
David with the Vans Era.
Adam’s Pick: Edwin Denim
Edwin IS denim, seriously, Tsunemi the founder of Edwin crafted the name by rearranging the letters of denim and flipping the “m” upside down, so that denim became Edwin. I could end the argument there, but I’m looking to crush my competition after my defeat last week.
Besides Tsunemi holding the Guinness World record for “quickest to solve the back of a kid’s menu”, he was also a style pioneer, and denim presented a landscape for him to explore. Edwin’s innovative techniques of “old wash” and “stone washing” took denim, which at the time was a traditional workwear clothing item, and made it into a style cornerstone.
Being that durability is the driving inspiration behind denim manufacturing, Edwin also created what was the World’s heaviest denim, 16 ounces, in 1963. Of course, this weight has been surpassed, both by competition and by Edwin in more recent years, but we shouldn’t forget what brand started it all.
Now, if being at the forefront of style and durability isn’t enough to secure my victory, how about exclusivity. Edwin was not sold in the U.S. the past two years, due to the exchange rate between the yen and the dollar. With Edwin’s return, the brand remains very limited. It’s products are only sold in 75 specialty stores in the country. If all that is not convincing enough, Edwin has also been fine tuning their denim making skills for 63 years. Which takes me back to where I started. I say again “Edwin is denim”.
I may have lost the first battle, but “ARE YOU READY FOR A WAR?” -Adam Miclot.
David’s pick: Nudie Denim
Thanks to everyone who helped me win last week, now help me get a little streak going here! Nudie is a denim company from Gothenburg, Sweden. Nudie is the “naked truth about denim.” That’s real talk right there. What exactly does it mean though? It means Nudie recognizes denim lives with you when you wear it. Indigo fades with time and wear and shows the true character of the denim. Nudie is all about making jeans that can look better the more you wear them. Jeans are more than just a piece of clothing.
The model I picked is the Slim Jim. The Slim Jim is a straight fit that can either worn fitted, regular, or loose depending on the size you choose. The color is described as “dry dark.” Weave threads are dyed with indigo, weft threads are brown. This combination gives the denim its dark, but natural look. There is no wash on these jeans, the texture and color is a blank canvas for you to work with.
Slim Jims are 11.9oz jeans. Not too heavy, but not too light. In a place like Cleveland, where the weather can be almost 80 degrees one day, and 40 the next, it’s important to have versatile jeans. Being constructed with what is called “broken weft,” the Slim Jims resist the twisting of the leg that so often occurs with regular twill jeans. Also, unlike ring-ring/double ringspun denim, the broken weft allows the Slim Jims to retain a smooth surface both inside and out. Unlike a lot of premium raw denim out there, these bangers have a zip fly too! It seems like a no-brainer to have a zipper instead of a row of buttons, but most higher end jeans don’t have it!
These are made of 100% organic cotton from Turkey. This cotton is shipped to Italy to be crafted into the jeans you see before you right now. Organic farming is very important to Nudie as cotton production is responsible for 25% of all insecticide use worldwide! Nudie is a leader in making responsible choices for the environment while still making killer jeans.
There’s a reason you keep seeing those orange (or white or blue) waves on the pockets of everyone’s jeans… because Nudies are some of the best jeans you can buy in Cleveland (or anywhere for that matter). Nudies are the real deal. They’re the “naked truth about denim.”
Come on guys, real recognize real, let’s show Adam what’s up. PREPARE FOR COMBAT.
-David Peterson
This is a video by Takayuki Akachi of a girl traveling the world in her Levi’s. To me, this is what raw denim is all about- wearing your jeans as part of your journey. As this girls second skin, the fabric literally records the history of her two year trip around the world. You can see how her denim fades and ages into a beautiful shades of blue that can only be achieved by constant wear.
Interview Magazine has a full length feature write up on Japanese street fashion pioneer Hiroshi Fujiwara. It’s basically the story of his come up and is a very interesting read. Check it here.
Explanation from Adam: I feel like a large part of style is having a personal philosophy that guides you when you get dressed, or add to your wardrobe. Style is not just liking what you wear, but also, understanding why you like what you wear, and understanding that the clothes you wear can reflect the kind of person you are, or mood you are in.
So, as a new series for Ruleofnext I am going to be asking our customers: Why do you wear what you wear?
Why I wear what I wear:Diandre’s answer
“It’s and expression of me. It shows my originality and personality. Right now I am rocking some corduroys, because I don’t see anyone else in Cleveland doing that. I customized my dunks with some original drawings and glow in the dark shoe strings no one would ever expect that.”

Why I wear what I wear:Rashiyd’s answer
“I wear what I wear because I love fashion. I don’t like to be a clone. I like 10 Deep, Crooks and Castles, Y&R, Stussy. I have been trying to get a gig in fashion, modeling or photography because I feel like I have the eye for it. I just like style. That’s me and fashion is who I am.”

The other day on my way to Next Coventry to meet with Adam. I saw Next Sales Associate Corey in long trench coat. I asked him whats going on and he said “I feel like I got to show people what I’m working with.” I was confused until I saw Corey flashing people. Yes, Corey was on Coventry showing his stuff off. His stuff just so happened to be new 10 DEEP.
