SHOP TOPIC- The Future of Oprah

It’s been a week since Oprah had her last show on daytime television and surprisingly, we’ve survived.  After 25 years, the Big O said farewell to her dedicated fans with a two-day, star-studded tribute special and then her finale show where she spent the hour reflecting on what she’s learned over the years, and what her audience should take with them as her legacy.

During the countdown to her last show, Oprah shared testimonials and messages from her fans about how much she means to them and how much they will miss her show.  I was curious to know what my friends at the Beauty Salon and Barber Shop had to say in this week’s SHOP TOPIC: What has Oprah meant to you and how do you feel about the end of her show?

HITTING THE STREETS-Leopard Locks

I was walking down the streets of Cleveland and I “spotted” a girl with the most original hair style that I’ve ever seen. Her hair was bleached blond and shaved on the side. The shaved section was dyed to look like Leopard print. It was so different and innovative that I had to take a picture and share it with my readers.

I attend a lot of events around Cleveland.  I go to concerts, fashion shows, poetry readings, and various other occasions.  The event or the venue might change, but there seems to be one element that remains constant: Mike Dantzler.  Known better as Cleveland’s Own Mike D, he’s the man with the plan for what’s going on in the city.  You can either find him in the streets, or on TalkofCleveland.com.  Regardless of where you see him, you need to get familiar because he’s quite the resource for the social scene.  Hear what he had to say when I asked him a few questions…

Lamari Speaks

Autism is an epidemic that is plaguing our youth.  One out of 110 children are born with the disorder.  These numbers cannot be denied and these children’s needs cannot go ignored.  It is a problem that affects not only our nation, but our communities as well.  It is our responsibility to help these children be heard so that they get the necessary tools to assimilate to mainstream society.  Lamont Robinson of Today’s Styles and Cuts Barber Shop, has recognized these issues and is making an effort to educate the Cleveland area.  This past weekend, Lamont and radio personality, Latin Assassin, hosted an event to raise awareness for Autism and to support Lamont’s organization Lamari Speaks.

SHOP TOPIC: Jennifer Hudson’s Weight Loss

There’s no better way to get in touch with the streets than to go to the barber shop or the beauty salon. It’s the place where you can find real people talking about real subjects. I took a trip to Cleveland Heights and visited a barber shop and a beauty shop to get the opinion of local men and women on different subjects. It’s what I’m calling the barber shop/beauty shop topic or the Shop Topic.

This week’s Shop Topic is Jennifer Hudson’s Weight Loss: Was she better before or after shedding the pounds?

CLEVELAND SPOTLIGHT-Blaire Bommer

Writers are what we call silent heroes. Their words are always written, sometimes read, but not often spoken.  These people, these poets, take feelings from within, put their words on paper, and share that message in order to change the world.  Like the silent heroes that they are, these artists don’t often get recognized. They are usually part of an underground movement but with the help of Cleveland’s Blaire Bommer, this low profile perception is about to change.  She is a poet and owner of the non-profit organization Blasted Press.  Blaire is helping to promote creativity through chapbooks, which she describes as small paperback books that contain tales, ballads, fiction, or poems.  With a passion for promoting literacy and a unique perspective on life, Blaire Bommer is someone worth getting to know.  You’ll be interested in what she had to say when I asked her a few questions.

Will Work For Love

Usher’s OMG Tour is stopping in Cleveland on Thursday and I realized that I needed something to wear to the concert. I took a hidden track from Usher’s album “Here I Stand” and decided to make a shirt for the show.  Can you guess the name of the track? haha.
